Hill House Path

The walk up Hill House Path starts gentle enough, then rewards you with proper views across the Clyde estuary. It's a nature reserve just outside Helensburgh, so you're looking at woodland trails rather than manicured garden paths - which means muddy boots and the occasional root to trip over, but that's rather the point.

You'll pass through mixed woodland, and if you time it right in spring, the bluebells are genuinely worth the detour. The path climbs steadily without being brutal, taking maybe 45 minutes to the top depending on fitness. Once there, the vista opens up - you can see across to the Cowal Peninsula and down towards Glasgow. On a clear day it's excellent. On a grey Scottish day, which is likely, it's atmospheric rather than spectacular.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young legs will manage fine; very small children might find the gradient tedious. It's the sort of place where you'll see locals with dogs rather than tour groups with selfie sticks.

Free to access, and there's decent parking near Helensburgh town. Allow a couple of hours if you're not rushing. The nearby Rosneath Castle Caravan Park sits just 1.6 miles away, making this an easy morning activity before heading elsewhere in Argyll. It's not dramatic enough to plan a whole day around, but combined with exploring the town and the wider coastline, it slots in nicely.
