Hill Gate

You won't find crowds at Hill Gate, and that's rather the point. This Iron Age fort sits on high ground near Coventry, its earthwork ramparts still clearly visible if you know where to look - the kind of place that rewards a bit of curiosity and a decent map. The site itself is modest by archaeological standards, but stand on the ridge and you understand why Iron Age communities chose it: proper defensive position, views across the landscape, strategic hold over movement through Warwickshire.

History enthusiasts will get the most from a visit here. It's not a visitor centre experience with interpretation boards and a café - you're essentially walking the perimeter of ancient defences and using your imagination. Families with older kids who enjoy a bit of detective work on the landscape will find it engaging; younger children might lose interest quickly unless you spin a good story about warriors and sieges.

The practical reality is this is a free, open-access archaeological site with no formal facilities that we're aware of. Allow an hour to explore properly, maybe longer if you're photographing or sketching. Timing-wise, spring and autumn are best - you'll avoid summer mud and the overgrowth dies back enough to see the earthworks clearly.

Staying at Hollyfast Caravan Park just 3.3 miles away makes sense if you're basing yourself in the Coventry area. It's a worthwhile detour for anyone seriously interested in Iron Age Britain, less so if you're after something with more immediate visual drama or hands-on activity.
