Highlands Rough

The woodland at Highlands Rough, just outside Kidderminster, is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. Dense, undisturbed forest with proper trails cutting through, it's genuinely quiet - the kind of quiet where you notice birdsong. Walking here feels properly separated from the world, even though you're barely ten minutes from town.

It's ideal for people who want to move about without faffing with visitor centres or paying entrance fees. No facilities, no crowds, just trees and footpaths. Families with older kids will get something from it; younger ones might lose interest after an hour of walking. Serious walkers and wildlife spotters are the real winners here. You can easily spend two to three hours exploring without feeling like you're going in circles.

The forest isn't dramatic or showy. There are no viewpoints or photo ops to speak of. What it does offer is genuine woodland peace, and that's increasingly rare. Spring's particularly good when the light filters through the new growth. Winter walks are atmospheric too, if muddy.

If you're based at Wheathill Touring Park or Stanmore Hall just down the road, both five-star sites, Highlands Rough is a proper option for stretching your legs without leaving the area. It's worth adding to a day that includes other local activities rather than as a dedicated trip. Bring waterproofs regardless of the forecast.
