Highgrove

The woodland around Highgrove, just outside Llandeilo, is proper walking country. These are the sort of forests where you actually feel like you've stepped away from things - dense enough to lose the mobile signal, open enough that you're not tripping over roots every five seconds. The paths wind through a mix of conifer and broadleaf, with the Towy Valley dropping away to one side if you pick the right route.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a destination attraction with visitor facilities or a car park with an ice cream van - it's genuine woodland, the kind you explore rather than visit. Families with young kids might find 90 minutes to two hours about right before someone gets bored. Older children who can hike properly will manage a full afternoon. The terrain is manageable but muddy after rain, so decent boots matter.

The real draw is the peace. No gimmicks, no themed areas, just trees and the occasional view. It sits well within reach of the glamping spots round about - Ravenscroft Retreats and Gelli Glamping are barely two miles away, making it an easy morning or afternoon sortie from a longer Carmarthenshire stay. Pair it with a walk into Llandeilo itself, which has actual shops and pubs, and you've got a solid half-day planned.

Worth the drive? If you're already in the area, absolutely. If you're making a special trip from further afield, it depends how much you value quiet woodland over more famous attractions. No admission charge, no fussing about opening hours - just turn up with proper footwear.
