Higher Moor

The moorland around Bude rises inland, and Higher Moor is where you really feel the swell of it - open ground that rolls away with barely a tree in sight. It's a working nature reserve, which means you're not walking through some manicured patch but genuine, windswept habitat where heather and gorse actually thrive rather than just exist for the postcard.

What you get here depends entirely on what you're after. Walkers appreciate the space - paths run across the moor without the crowds you'd find at more famous Cornish spots, and the views back toward Bude and the coast are genuinely worth the leg work. Bird watchers come for the raptors and ground-nesting species. It's not a destination where you'll spend four hours, but as a morning walk from Bude or a break between beach days, it clears the head properly.

Go in autumn or winter when the light's better and you won't bake walking into the wind. Spring's decent too if the weather plays along. Summer can feel a bit exposed and warm for what's essentially a trudge across open ground.

If you're based at Wooda Farm or Atlantic Horizons - both excellent parks - Higher Moor is a proper alternative to another beach session. It's free, it's wild in the best sense, and honestly it suits families who don't mind their kids getting muddy more than those after a gentle riverside stroll. Not Instagram-pretty, but real.
