Higher Bury Camp

Finding Iron Age earthworks on the outskirts of Exeter isn't quite what you'd expect from a city-edge walk, but Higher Bury Camp delivers exactly that. This is a proper archaeological site - a hillfort from around 500 BC with ditches and ramparts still visible enough to make sense of the landscape around them. You won't find interpretation boards or a visitor centre. What you get instead is the satisfaction of standing where Iron Age people once defended their settlement, with views across Devon that would have made military sense back then.

Walkers will appreciate the location most. It's not a destination in itself - allow twenty minutes to poke around and understand the layout - but it slots well into a longer ramble in the rolling country just outside Exeter. History types will find it genuinely interesting, the kind of place where you can read the fortifications in the ground itself. Kids might find it a bit abstract; there's no "doing" here, just looking and imagining.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though there's no formal visitor infrastructure. Go on a clear day when you can see the surrounding terrain properly. If you're based at Sunsets & Marshmallows Glamping or Barley Meadow Touring Park nearby, it's worth a morning visit as part of a broader Exeter countryside loop rather than a standalone trip.
