High Wood

You'll find yourself walking beneath towering Scots pines and spruce that block out half the sky - this is High Wood, a proper forest block that feels genuinely wild despite sitting just outside Strathdon. The woodland here is dense enough that on a grey day it gets properly atmospheric, with the forest floor thick with needles and moss underfoot.

It's a straightforward walk through the trees rather than a destination in itself. Most people reckon on spending anything from an hour to three hours depending on which paths you follow - there's no single main route, so you'll need a map or decent navigation skills. The woodland stretches across enough ground that you won't feel crowded even if others are about, which is rare enough in Scottish forests these days.

Historians and birdwatchers will find their time well spent here, and it's absolutely fine for families who don't need a cafe or visitor centre to keep the kids entertained. If your children are the type who get bored without marked trails and facilities, this might feel too raw. Walkers after a serious leg-stretcher will appreciate the terrain.
