High Rocks National Monument

The sandstone cliffs rear up out of the Kentish woodland like something from a different county altogether. You're walking through narrow passages between weathered boulders, scrambling over stone steps worn smooth by centuries of feet, with the forest pressing in on both sides. Historically, the rocks became fashionable in the 18th century when visitors would come specifically to admire the dramatic geology and natural architecture. These days, most people use it as a walk rather than a destination - and that's the best way to approach it. The scrambling bits appeal to older kids, though younger ones might find the stone steps a bit of a slog if you're trying to tackle the whole thing. Adults who enjoy a bit of proper woodland rambling rather than manicured trail-walking will get the most from it.

Just north of Tunbridge Wells, it slots perfectly into a park-based holiday in the area. Glamping at Honnington Farm sits only 3.5 miles away and would give you a comfortable base for exploring both this and the broader Weald countryside. Apple Acres is equally close at 4.1 miles if you want more conventional camping with facilities. The rocks themselves won't take more than an hour unless you're genuinely scrambling every passage, so pair it with a town wander in Tunbridge Wells or another woodland walk nearby to make a proper day of it.
