High Bull Barn

The walk up to High Bull Barn from Hawes takes you through proper Yorkshire moorland - open, windswept, the sort of landscape that makes you feel properly small. What you're looking for are the remains of a prehistoric settlement, Bronze Age mostly, scattered across the hillside as low stone circles and foundations barely a foot high in places. It's not dramatic stuff. There are no reconstructions, no visitor centre, just the land itself and what archaeologists have worked out from what's left in the soil.

You'll need a decent map and ideally some archaeological knowledge to get the most from it, to be honest. History buffs and serious walkers will find the site compelling - there's something moving about standing where people lived four thousand years ago, seeing the same views they saw. Families with young kids might struggle; there's not much to see if you don't know what you're looking at, and the moorland walk itself is fairly exposed.

Give yourself a good couple of hours for the walk and a proper look around. It's free, naturally - it's just land. Best tackled on a clear day when the views stretch for miles across Wensleydale.

If you're camped at Stablefell Holidays or Hawes Caravan and Motorhome Club just outside town, this makes a rewarding half-day expedition. Pair it with a walk down into Hawes itself for a decent meal afterwards. The archaeology is genuine and undisturbed, but you've got to want it.
