Herrington's Pit

The water at Herrington's Pit is a deep, surprising blue - the sort of colour you don't expect to find in Norfolk's flatlands. It's a flooded former gravel pit just east of Swaffham, and it's become something of a quiet spot for birdwatchers and anyone after a bit of peace away from the main drag.

There's no facilities to speak of, which means you're getting the real thing here - no tea kiosks, no themed playgrounds, just you and the water. The walking is straightforward enough, with paths running round the perimeter, and the lake itself is genuinely lovely to look at. Herons work the shallows regularly, and it's the sort of place where you'll spot waterfowl you've never bothered identifying before.

It won't eat up your whole day, if I'm honest. An hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the type to sit and watch. That said, it pairs well with a stay at Breckland Meadows Caravan Park, just 2.4 miles away - gives you a proper excuse to get out and walk when you're sick of the campsite.

Walkers and bird types will get the most from it. Children will either think it's brilliant or be bored within half an hour, depending entirely on their patience for standing still. Go early morning for the best wildlife action and the nicest light on the water. It's free, entirely unmanned, and you won't find crowds here.
