Heron’s Carr

This Norfolk wetland sits east of Norwich and draws birdwatchers like magnets to a fridge. Heron's Carr is exactly what its name suggests - a proper fen landscape where grey herons stalk the shallows and you'll see reed warblers, bitterns if you're lucky, and that whole cast of water-loving characters that make the Norfolk Broads so special.

Walking the paths here feels genuinely peaceful. The carr - that's the local word for wet woodland - has a quiet intensity to it. Bring binoculars and patience. Spring and early summer are stellar for birds, though honestly autumn migration season brings the real excitement if you know what you're looking for.

It's the sort of place that rewards actual effort rather than a quick pass-through. Families with restless small children might find it a bit slow; this isn't a theme park, it's a serious birdwatching spot. But if you've got teenagers or adults who actually care about wildlife, you'll get hours out of it. The nearest caravan parks - Norfolk Broads Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite and Hickling Campsite are both within three miles - make it a natural fit for a longer Norfolk holiday.

Allow at least two hours minimum, longer if you're serious about birding. There's no visitor centre that I'm aware of, and facilities are minimal, so come prepared. Free to access, thankfully, and genuinely worth the detour if you're doing the broader Broads circuit.
