Hermitage Fishing Lake & Recreation Ground

The lake itself is the main draw here - a proper fishing spot that's been going for decades, ringed by trees and surprisingly peaceful given it's only a stone's throw from Nuneaton. You can fish if you're after that, obviously, but plenty of people just come for the walk around the water or to sit on the grass with a flask. The recreation ground bit is genuinely useful if you've got restless kids in tow. There's space to run about, a few picnic spots, and the whole setup feels like proper local life rather than a tourist trap.

Who gets the most out of it? Anglers, definitely. Dog walkers too - the paths are decent and the water keeps things interesting. Families looking for somewhere low-key will find it suits them fine, though don't expect play equipment or cafes. It's free, which helps, and you can spend anywhere from forty minutes to a couple of hours depending on mood.

Staying at New Forest View or Fire & Stars means you're within easy driving distance, making this a nice half-day outing between bigger Derbyshire attractions. The glamping at Field of Dreams is close enough too. Go early morning if you want solitude, or late afternoon when the light starts doing something interesting on the water. Winter's actually decent here - fewer people and the bare trees open up sight lines. It won't blow your mind, but it's exactly what it promises to be.
