What you're looking at here are the remains of a substantial military and administrative site that once commanded the Fen landscape around 100 AD. The museum itself handles the finds with real care: pottery, coins, tools, and fragments that tell you more about daily Roman life than you'd expect from a small Cambridgeshire museum.

It's not flashy. If your lot are after Roman soldiers on horseback or gladiator drama, they'll be disappointed. But if you've got teenagers who've just discovered history, or you're the type who finds a well-organised collection of pottery shards genuinely absorbing, this delivers. The site itself - out in the flat Fenland - has an oddly atmospheric quality, especially on grey afternoons when the sky seems to press down.

Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking notes. The nearby Fenland Camping and Caravan Park sits just 2.2 miles away, making this an easy morning visit before heading elsewhere in the region. Fields End Water is only slightly further if you're after something with more facilities. Stonea works best as part of a broader Cambridgeshire itinerary rather than a destination in itself, but if Roman archaeology interests you even slightly, it's worth the detour from March.
