Herd Hill

You won't find tourist crowds fighting for space on Herd Hill, which is precisely why it's worth the trip from Wigton. This modest peak rises above the surrounding Cumbrian farmland, offering proper views across the Lake District's northern fringes if the weather cooperates - and that's a big if in this part of the world.

The walk itself is straightforward rather than dramatic. It's the kind of fell that rewards you without demanding much in return: perhaps forty minutes up from the nearby lanes, decent underfoot mostly, with enough elevation to feel like you've actually achieved something. On a clear day you can pick out the distant hills; on a grey one, you'll at least have peace and quiet, which matters more than most guidebooks admit.

This suits families after a proper walk that won't exhaust younger legs, or anyone based at Glendale Holiday Park just down the road looking for an afternoon stretch. Queensberry Bay and West Moss-Side, both rated considerably higher than Glendale, are further afield but still within striking distance. Walkers of all abilities get something from it, though don't expect Catbells drama or Instagram moments.

There's no visitor infrastructure, no admission fee, no faffing about with opening times. Just turn up, park sensibly, and go. An hour and a half covers the whole business, leaving you back for a decent lunch in Wigton. It won't be the highlight of your Cumbrian break, but it'll feel earned in a way the well-trodden peaks don't.
