Henthorn Park

The River Ribble winds through Henthorn Park like it's got all the time in the world, and frankly, so should you. This Lancashire nature reserve sits just outside Clitheroe and feels properly removed from the tourist hustle - you'll spot herons picking their way through the shallows, buzzards wheeling overhead, and the occasional flash of kingfisher if you're patient enough.

It's a cracking spot for serious birdwatchers and riverside walkers. The paths follow the water closely enough that you feel genuinely close to nature without needing scrambling boots or a navigation app. The meadows flood in winter, which transforms the place into something altogether different - wader heaven for twitchers, but check conditions before you go. In summer it's drier and altogether more pleasant for a casual stroll. Allow a couple of hours if you're not rushing; longer if you've brought binoculars and a field guide.

If you're based at Cross Lane Caravan Park just 2.3 miles away, or roughing it at Calder Farm's camping pods a bit further out, Henthorn makes an excellent half-day sortie. It's free to access and works perfectly alongside exploring Clitheroe itself - combine it with a market town wander and you've got a proper day sorted. Families with older kids who actually enjoy walking will get something from it; toddlers and those expecting visitor facilities will find the place a bit thin on comfort stops. Leave time to just sit by the water and watch. That's really what it's for.
