Henderson Park & View Point

The viewpoint at Henderson Park gives you a proper grip on what the Scottish Borders landscape is actually about - rolling hills that fold into each other like a rumpled blanket, stretching all the way to the horizon. It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured garden, so expect windswept grasses, tangly undergrowth, and the kind of views that make you understand why people fought over this land for centuries.

The walk itself isn't brutal. You get the vantage point without needing serious fitness, though it can be bracing if the wind's up. On a clear day you can see for miles, which is the whole point. Bring a camera if you must, but honestly it's one of those places where standing still and just looking does most of the work for you.

Walkers will get the most from this - it slots perfectly into a day exploring the Borders, and it's close enough to Coldstream that you can combine it with a wander through town or a quick stop at Coldstream Holiday Park if you're based there. The reserve itself is free and you can turn up whenever suits you. Allow an hour if you're being leisurely, half that if you just want the view and a quick leg-stretch.

It's worth the detour if you're already in the region, but don't drive an hour out of your way just for this. It works best as part of a broader ramble through the Borders rather than a standalone destination.
