Hen Moss

Hen Moss is a proper working forest just a few miles outside Dumfries, and it's the kind of place that reveals itself slowly. You're not walking into some manicured visitor attraction here - this is a working woodland where the timber industry still operates, which somehow makes it feel more genuine than the polished alternatives. The forest floor is soft underfoot, dense with needles and moss, and the air has that clean, slightly resinous smell you only get in places like this.

Walkers will get the most from Hen Moss. The trails wind through mixed woodland - plenty of conifers but enough deciduous trees to keep things visually interesting. It's not demanding terrain; the paths are well enough maintained that families with kids can manage the shorter routes without too much fuss. Allow an hour for a decent loop, longer if you're the type to stop and listen to the birds.

The forest sits nicely within reach of Dumfries itself, so it works as a half-day excursion rather than a full day out. Admission appears to be free, which is always a bonus.
