Hemyock Castle, Devon

The ruins sit on a low hill just outside Honiton, commanding views across the Devon-Somerset border that don't quite live up to the effort of getting there. Hemyock Castle is what remains of a 14th-century stronghold - basically earthworks, foundations, and a decent stretch of surviving wall if you know where to look. The site itself is free to wander, though there's precious little interpretation on the ground, so you'll want to do your homework beforehand or it'll feel like poking about in an overgrown field.

Historyminded visitors will get more from it than families with restless kids. The walk around the perimeter takes maybe 20 minutes if you're thorough. What makes it worthwhile is the quiet - there's nobody here, and on a clear day the Blackdown Hills roll away nicely in the distance. It's the sort of place that works best as a add-on when you're exploring the area rather than a destination in itself.

If you're based at Hartridge Springs Spa Glamping or Holly Bush Caravan Park, both within five or six miles, this makes a reasonable afternoon detour. Combine it with a proper walk in the surrounding countryside, perhaps heading towards the higher ground beyond Honiton, and you've got a decent half-day sorted. Spring or early autumn are best - avoid wet weather unless you fancy squelchy grass and muddy shoes for your trouble.
