Hembury Castle

The earthworks at Hembury, just outside South Brent, are genuinely impressive - a Norman motte-and-bailey that's been quietly crumbling for nearly a thousand years. You're looking at substantial defensive ditches and ramparts, the kind of thing that makes you realise how seriously medieval folk took keeping invaders out. There's not much standing stonework to speak of, but that's rather the point: this is archaeology you can walk around and actually feel the shape of.

It's a proper walk, mind you. The path from the car park climbs steeply through woodland before opening onto the castle plateau itself - maybe twenty minutes on the way up. Families with young children might find the ascent a bit much, though older kids who like scrambling about on ancient earthworks will be genuinely absorbed. You can easily spend an hour exploring the defensive lines and imagining siege engines at work, or just soaking in the views across Devon countryside.

Free to visit, and there are no opening hours to worry about - it's just there, accessible year-round. The woodland setting means it's lovely in autumn when the canopy's turning, though muddy after rain. If you're staying at Ashbourne Woods nearby, Hembury makes an excellent half-day outing that breaks up a holiday nicely without requiring much planning. Local history buffs will find it rewarding; casual visitors might find it a bit sparse if they're expecting castle towers.
