Helwell Beach

The beach at Helwell sits just outside Watchet on Somerset's coast, a stretch of shingle and sand that feels properly removed from the holiday park bustle despite being metres from Haven Doniford Bay. It's the kind of place where you actually notice the tide tables matter - low water reveals proper exploring territory, high water can close things down entirely.

What you get here is straightforward seaside simplicity. Rock pools when conditions allow, a decent bit of beach to kick about on, and the honest feeling of a working coast rather than a polished resort. The cliffs behind provide shelter from the worst of the wind, and views toward Blue Anchor sweep along nicely. Families based at the nearby parks (Warren Bay is barely over a mile away) can make this a proper morning out without needing to drive anywhere.

It's not dramatic. You won't find yourself gasping at views or queuing for photos. But that's precisely why it works - especially if you're staying put for a week and need somewhere to break the routine. Walkers appreciate the access points, and anyone after genuine peace gets exactly that. The shingle can be a bit on the hard side for sprawling, and there's no facilities right on the beach itself, so you'll want to sort supplies in Watchet first.

Best visited when the tide's out - that's when it opens up. Parking is limited but manageable if you arrive early. Come here not for the spectacle but for the breathing room.
