Hell Gate

You'll find yourself standing on a ridge overlooking the Severn Gorge, staring at a natural rock gateway that's been carved by water and time into something genuinely dramatic. Hell Gate is an honest-to-god geological feature - two towering sandstone buttresses creating a natural passage through the gorge near Coalbrookdale, and it's absolutely worth the scramble to reach it.

The walk down to the gate isn't trivial. You're picking your way through woodland, dropping elevation steadily, and it demands proper footwear and a head for heights in places. But that's rather the point. You're not paying for the privilege, and you're not queuing with school groups. It's proper outdoors.

Geology enthusiasts will spend ages reading the rock faces - the layers tell the story of ancient seas and erosion patterns you simply can't grasp from a car park. Walkers doing the longer Ironbridge Gorge circuit find it a satisfying waypoint rather than a destination in itself. Casual visitors might find the scramble more effort than the payoff, if I'm honest.

Timing matters. Go on a quiet weekday morning and you've got the place to yourself. Weekends bring hikers and families, which pushes the scramble from challenging to properly crowded.

Stay at Irongorge Camping or Sytche if you're basing yourself here - both are minutes from Coalbrookdale's industrial heritage trails, and Hell Gate works perfectly as a morning exploration before tackling the museums and ironworks that dominate the area. Allow ninety minutes return, more if you're taking photographs.
