Helensburgh (Rhu) Airfield and MAEE Memorial

The airfield at Rhu, just outside Helensburgh, doesn't announce itself with fanfare - you'll find yourself on a quiet stretch of Argyll coastline where the Clyde opens up to the west. This is where the Marine Aircraft Experimental Establishment worked during the Second World War, testing seaplanes and flying boats under conditions of strict secrecy. The MAEE Memorial marks what was once a vital part of Britain's naval aviation programme, though there's precious little left to see beyond the monument itself and your own imagination filling in the gaps.

It's the sort of place that appeals to military history enthusiasts and wartime buffs rather than casual day-trippers. You won't spend hours here - twenty minutes is realistic - but the setting matters. Standing at the water's edge, you get a sense of why they chose this spot: sheltered, remote enough for classified work, and with the Firth of Clyde as your natural runway. The views across the water towards the Cowal Peninsula are genuinely lovely.

Walkers staying at Rosneath Castle Caravan Park, less than a mile away, could easily incorporate this into a coastal ramble. It's also within striking distance of Stoneymollan on Loch Lomond if you're basing yourself there. Admission appears free, though facilities are minimal. Go on a clear day - the grey weather that Argyll specialises in doesn't do the memorial justice.
