Hedley Hall Woods

The woodland around Hedley Hall, just outside Stanley, is exactly the sort of place you stumble upon by accident and then can't stop recommending to people. It's proper woodland walking - the kind with damp earth underfoot, tangled undergrowth, and enough quietness to actually hear yourself think. The hall itself is largely private, but the woods are open for rambling, and that's where the appeal lies.

You're looking at easy to moderate walking through mixed woodland, with paths that wind through old growth and younger trees. It's not dramatic in the way some northern woods are, but it's genuine and unhurried. Families with younger kids will manage it fine on a dry day, though it can get boggy in places after rain. Allow an hour to ninety minutes for a decent circuit without rushing.

What makes it worth the visit is that it sits within reaching distance of Beamish Holiday Park and the excellent Beamish Glamping - if you're basing yourself at either and want a proper walk that isn't a tourist crush, this delivers. It's also close enough to West Hall Glamping if you're staying there. The area around Stanley itself isn't going to win awards, but these woods offer a genuine escape without needing to drive for hours.

Best visited when the ground's had a few dry days. Spring's particularly good when the woodland floor comes alive. This isn't a headline attraction - you won't Instagram your way through an afternoon here. But if you're after honest walking and don't mind rough edges, it's well worth including in a park-based break.
