Hedingham Castle

The keep dominates everything when you first walk through the gates - a proper Norman tower that's been standing since 1140, and it still commands the landscape around Halstead. You're looking at one of the finest examples of a 12th-century castle keep in England, which means the thick stone walls, the narrow windows, and the sheer presence of the thing tell you exactly why people took this place seriously.

Inside, you climb a lot of stairs. Quite a lot, actually. The views from the top are worth the effort though, spreading out across the Blackwater Valley. The castle grounds themselves give you room to wander, and there's enough going on - the keep, the surviving defensive walls, the bridge - to keep you occupied for a solid couple of hours. Kids will get a kick out of the fortress aspect, though they'll lose interest faster if they're not already keen on medieval history.

Admission costs a few quid, and it's the kind of place that rewards a proper visit rather than a quick snap for Instagram. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter, which suits the atmosphere better. If you're staying at Gosfield Lake Resort or Woodchests Glamping nearby, it's close enough to combine with other activities in the area without feeling like a detour. Not a massive day out, but a genuine piece of Norman engineering that's worth an afternoon.
