Heath URC Church

The squat stone chapel sits on the hillside above Elland like it's been keeping watch for two centuries. Heath URC Church is one of those places that rewards a detour if you're passing through the Calderdale valleys, though honestly, you won't stumble upon it by accident - it's properly tucked away on the moors.

What you get is straightforward: a sturdy Pennine chapel built in solid stone, the kind of building that tells you more about Yorkshire grit than a dozen guidebooks. The interior is modest and dignified, with that particular quiet that old churches seem to hold. There's a working graveyard around it, good for a wander if you're into reading the names and dates - tells you something about who lived and died in these hills.

This isn't a major attraction. You're looking at twenty minutes maximum, maybe longer if you sit a moment and take in the moorland views. Families with restless kids might find it a bit spare. History enthusiasts and anyone interested in Nonconformist chapels - which Uniteds were - will get more from it.

The location is the real draw. If you're based at Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the valley, it makes a decent morning walk. The surrounding moorland is proper walking country, and the chapel marks a nice waypoint rather than a destination in itself. Check opening times locally before you trek up there though - it's not the sort of place with a helpful opening schedule posted online.
