Hazelton Common Nature Reserve

A stretch of open heathland just outside Emsworth, Hazelton Common is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan around. The reserve sits quiet and unassuming - gorse and birch scrub punctuated by patches of heath, with footpaths winding through in no particular hurry. On a clear day the views open up across Hampshire's rolling downs, and there's genuine peace here, the kind you don't get on crowded nature trails.

It's best suited to walkers and birdwatchers rather than families with small children - no facilities to speak of, and the paths can turn boggy after rain. Bring decent boots. The main appeal is the sense of space and the likelihood of spotting linnets, stonechats, and the occasional adder if you're lucky (they're harmless if left alone). Most people spend an hour here, maybe ninety minutes if you're properly exploring.

The reserve works well as part of a wider ramble around the Emsworth area - you could easily string it together with walks down to Chichester Harbour or across to other local commons.
