Hawk

The gallery sits on Hebden Bridge's main drag, and it's one of those places that stops you mid-stride. HAWK is small - deliberately so - and focuses on contemporary art and craft, with rotating exhibitions that actually feel curated by people who give a damn rather than just filling wall space.

You're looking at work from Yorkshire artists mostly, ceramics, prints, sculpture, the sort of stuff that makes you reconsider what a coffee table should hold. The space itself is intimate without feeling cramped, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. Spent a good forty minutes there last visit and felt properly engaged rather than rushed through.

It's free admission, which helps. Half an hour is enough if you're moving, but give yourself an hour if any particular piece catches you. Worth a stop if you're already exploring Hebden Bridge's creative side - the town's thick with independent galleries and shops. Park up at either Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Old Chamber Camping (both practically on the doorstep) and you've got no excuse to rush through.

Not a destination in itself, but absolutely the sort of gallery that reminds you why you came to this part of Yorkshire. Best on a weekday morning when it's quiet.
