The Hawk & Owl Trust's Sculthorpe reserve sits just outside Fakenham, a proper working nature reserve rather than a petting zoo with birds on strings. You're walking through actual Norfolk wetland - reed beds, open water, scrubland - the kind of landscape that birds actually want to live in, not somewhere they're forced to perform.

What you get is binoculars weather. Bring them. The reserve has viewing areas positioned so you can scan for marsh harriers, barn owls if you're lucky, and countless wading birds depending on season. There's real information here too - the trust runs the place as a conservation site, so the interpretation boards tell you what the land's actually doing rather than just pointing at birds.

Historically this works if you're into raptors and wetland ecology. Kids will manage an hour, maybe ninety minutes, especially in spring when things are nesting. Families on the glamping sites nearby - Wild Meadow, North Norfolk Glamping, Norfolk Coast Caravans and Camping - will find it a decent morning out rather than a full day. The terrain's manageable, paths are mostly level.

Admission details aren't pinned online, so ring ahead to check entry fees and opening times before you go. Best visited in May or June when breeding birds are active, or during autumn migration. Winter can be bleak out there, and I mean that literally - the wind comes straight off the North Sea. Plan two or three hours maximum. It's honest work, this place - not a spectacle, but worthwhile if you actually care about what happens to birds.
