Hawk and Owl Trust Shapwick Moor Nature Reserve

The Hawk and Owl Trust reserve at Shapwick Moor is a proper working nature reserve, not a manicured visitor attraction with gift shops and car parks. You're here to watch birds of prey - real ones, doing what they do. It's about 3 miles south of Wedmore, out on the Somerset Levels where the landscape is flat, wide open, and genuinely wild.

What you get is access to habitat where red kites, buzzards, and barn owls actually hunt. The trust manages the land specifically for these birds, so sightings are far more likely here than at most reserves. Bring binoculars and patience. Early morning is best - the light's good and birds are active. You'll need an hour minimum, but serious birders could easily spend half a day.

It works well if you're camping at The Hideout or Castle Farm, both within spitting distance. After a morning on the moor, you've got the Somerset Levels to explore - it's a cycling hotspot and genuinely beautiful if you like that flat, water-filled landscape. The reserve itself is free to access, though it pays to check conditions after rain since it floods regularly.

Not for everyone. If your kids need amusement arcades and ice cream vans, they'll be bored within twenty minutes. But for families serious about wildlife, or walkers wanting something different from the usual woodland trails, this is worth the detour. The birds don't disappoint if you're patient.
