Hawes Wood

There's a proper woodland walk to be had at Hawes Wood, just outside Kendal, where the trees do what trees should do - actually make you feel like you've left civilisation behind. It's a forest walk rather than a manicured attraction, which means no visitor centre, no gift shop, no entrance fee. Just you and the paths winding through mature woodland that feels genuinely quiet even when it's busy.

The wood itself isn't massive, so budget an hour to ninety minutes depending on how much you fancy dawdling. It's the sort of place where families with reasonably confident walkers will have a decent time - muddy underfoot in winter, but there's something satisfying about that. Older kids who've had enough of staring at museum displays will perk up here. For serious hikers, it's less about the destination and more about adding a woodland stretch to a longer Kendal-area walk.

Worth knowing: there's no obvious visitor facilities, so sort yourself in Kendal first. The wood works nicely as a morning or afternoon add-on if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan parks - Kendal Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Little Acre Holiday Park are close enough that you could pop over easily. It's not the sort of place that'll blow your mind, but it does what a proper forest should: offers a bit of peace and some decent air. Go when you need a break from the Lakes chaos, not when you need a main attraction.
