Haver Dale

The beech and oak woodland here feels properly separated from the world, even though Malton sits just a few miles away. Haver Dale is the sort of forest walk that rewards you for turning up - not flashy, not groomed to within an inch of its life, but genuinely peaceful if you time it right.

You're looking at a decent stretch of managed woodland where the paths are clear enough and the canopy does that thing mature trees do when light filters through in long golden shafts. It's walker territory, really. Families with young kids might find an hour here enough before boredom sets in, but if you're after a proper forest ramble with some real distance under your boots, Haver Dale delivers. Spring and autumn are best - muddy in winter, potentially busy with school groups in high summer.

This works brilliantly as a morning walk before or after the glamping sites nearby. Wolds Walk, Yorkshire Wolds, and Lahtle Wood are all within a few minutes' drive, so you could pair a forest outing with one of those as part of a longer North Yorkshire break. The proximity to Malton means you can grab breakfast or lunch in town and still have most of the day for walking.

Free admission, no fees, no car park attendant. Just turn up and go. Allow two to three hours for a proper circuit if you're not rushing. It's unpretentious woodland at its best - no visitor centre, no gift shop, no performance. That's exactly the appeal.
