Hatherop Recreation Ground

The Hatherop Recreation Ground sits just outside Fairford, a proper slice of Oxfordshire countryside that most people drive straight past without noticing. It's a nature reserve rather than a manicured park - think open grassland, woodland edges, and the kind of scrubby undergrowth where you'll actually spot something interesting if you know where to look.

Walkers get the most from this place. There are decent paths threading through, nothing strenuous, and the whole thing's a haven for birdwatchers. Spring and autumn see migratory species passing through, which gets the twitchers genuinely excited. Children under eight will find it a bit samey after thirty minutes unless they're the type to hunt for insects and collect interesting sticks - which, fair play, some kids absolutely are.

You won't find visitor facilities or entry fees here. It's free, open most hours, and the car park's straightforward. Allow an hour for a good wander, less if you're just after a quick leg-stretch between activities.

If you're based at Burford Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite five or six miles away, Hatherop works well as a morning walk before heading into Fairford town centre for lunch. It's not a destination in itself, but it breaks up a park holiday nicely - especially if you've got birdwatchers in the family. The light's best in late afternoon, when the grassland catches the sun properly.
