Walking into Hatfield Plantation feels like stepping into proper woodland - all tall pines, dappled light, and the satisfying crunch of needles underfoot. It's a working forest just outside Mansfield, the sort of place where you'll see timber operations alongside peaceful trails, which gives it a grounded, unglamorous feel that many prefer to manicured country estates.

The main appeal here is straightforward: miles of walking through dense coniferous forest. It's not dramatic scenery - no sudden vistas or dramatic valleys - but it's the kind of steady, meditative walking that clears your head. The trails are well-used and easy to follow, making it decent for families with kids who can manage a couple of hours on foot. Older children especially tend to enjoy the sense of being properly immersed in woodland rather than pottering around a visitor centre.

You'll want to allow at least two hours to make it worthwhile, though circuits vary depending on your route. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, so pack water and a snack. Autumn's your best bet - the light improves and it's far less muggy than summer.

For a park-based holiday, Hatfield works well as a morning walk when staying at Clumber Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Sherwood Castle Holiday Forest nearby.
