Hasting Hill isn't a grand summit - it's a modest rise on the Durham plateau that rewards you with proper views across the Wear Valley if you time it right. The walk itself is straightforward, nothing that'll have your legs complaining, and you'll likely have the place mostly to yourself, which is rarer than you'd think for something this close to Durham town centre.

What makes it worth the detour is the perspective. From up there you get a real sense of how the landscape unfolds - woodland, distant hills, the river threading through below. It's the sort of spot where you understand why people settled around Durham in the first place. On a clear day it's genuinely lovely; on a grey one, frankly, there's not much to keep you.

Historically minded types will get more from the climb if they know the area's been walked for centuries - it sits within that network of Durham heritage spots - but you don't need a doctorate to enjoy it. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're proper little hikers; there's no visitor facilities or attractions at the top, just views and grass.
