Hassendean Hill

The walk up Hassendean Hill is straightforward enough, rising just over 300 metres from the fields near Hawick. On a clear day - and you'll want clear weather for this one - you get proper views across the Borders, south towards the Cheviot and west into the moorland that rolls toward Dumfries. The summit itself is unremarkable: a trig point, some worn grass, nothing fancy. But that's rather the point.

This is a walker's hill, nothing more, nothing less. You're looking at maybe ninety minutes there and back from the nearest parking, with a gentle gradient that suits families with older kids or anyone who doesn't fancy scrambling. The sheep don't mind you much, and in autumn the light across the valleys is genuinely lovely.

Timing matters here. Aim for an afternoon walk when the sun's lower - the ridge catches it beautifully then. Avoid midday if you can. There's no cafe at the top, no visitor centre, no crowds. If that sounds bleak, it's not your hill. But if you're staying at Stouslie Snugs, the luxury farm glamping place just down the road, this is an ideal leg-stretch that takes you out of the site without eating up the whole day. Pop it in between lazy mornings and evening drinks without guilt. Free access, naturally. Just head up from the fields and don't expect more than decent views and fresh air.
