Hasling Plantation

The moment you step into Hasling Plantation, you're wrapped in that particular kind of quiet you only get in a proper Yorkshire forest. It's a working woodland just outside Otley, and it feels like the sort of place locals have known about for decades without making a fuss about it.

Walking through here, you get mixed woodland - coniferous and broadleaf - which means there's always something different depending on the season. Spring brings proper carpets of bluebells. Autumn's when the light filters through in that golden way that makes you actually understand why people bang on about forests. The paths are well-maintained but not overdone, which is exactly right.

This is cracking for walkers who want a proper woodland experience without the crowds you'd get at the bigger attractions. Not really a destination for under-fives unless you're after a gentle stroll - older kids who like exploring will get more from it. History types won't find much here; it's purely about the woodland itself.

You can easily spend ninety minutes to two hours wandering around depending on which paths you take. It's free to access, which is a bonus. The proximity to Windmill Retreats, just six miles away, makes it a natural addition to a park holiday - you could easily pop out for a few hours without losing half your day to travel. Otley itself is close by if you need a coffee or lunch stop, though the real appeal here is just getting among the trees and breathing properly for a bit.
