Hart Hill

Hart Hill sits just outside Stirling, a proper little summit that doesn't demand much in the way of mountaineering but rewards the short walk with surprisingly good views across the Lowlands. The ascent is manageable - nothing that'll have you gasping for breath, just a steady climb through woodland before you break out onto open ground where the landscape unfolds in all directions.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're based at The WHW Hotel & Campsite nearby and fancy a couple of hours away from the campground. Families with older kids will find it straightforward enough; younger ones might lose interest on the way up unless you're good at pointing out birds and interesting rock formations. Serious hikers passing through the area won't be massively challenged, but it's a decent afternoon jaunt if you're not heading into the higher Highlands.

The views are genuinely decent on a clear day - you can see far enough to make the effort feel worthwhile, and Glasgow's not so far away that you feel completely isolated. Bring decent walking boots; the path gets a bit boggy depending on weather, and Scottish Lowland soil has a tendency to hold water like a sponge. Allow two to three hours including a breather at the top.

There's no visitor centre or facilities on the hill itself, so come prepared with water and maybe a snack. Free to visit, obviously - it's just a hill. Worth it as part of a broader walking day in the area rather than as a destination in itself.
