Harrow Pump Track

The Harrow Pump Track sits just outside Borehamwood and is genuinely one of those places you'd walk straight past if you didn't know it was there. It's a nature reserve, yes, but don't expect manicured gardens or visitor facilities - this is proper grassland and wetland habitat, the sort of place that rewards a slow wander rather than a quick tick-box visit.

The pump track itself is the historical bit. An old pumping station once stood here, part of the infrastructure that kept water flowing through Hertfordshire. What remains now is mostly the landscape it shaped - wetland pools and rough grassland that've become genuinely valuable for local wildlife. Dragonflies, water birds, the occasional newt if you're lucky and quiet about it. It's the kind of place where you actually notice the difference between seasons.

Walkers will find it worth an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the sort who stops to listen. Birdwatchers should absolutely put it on their list. Families with young kids might find it a bit too unstructured - there's no play equipment or obvious trails, just open space and the freedom to explore. That's either brilliant or tedious depending on your crew.

If you're staying at Bushey Hall Park nearby, it makes a proper morning outing. Free access, no gates, no faffing about with car parks. Go in spring or early summer when the insects are active and the light's decent for spotting things. Bring binoculars if you've got them.
