Harris Library

The Harris in Preston is one of those places that catches you off guard. You walk in expecting a standard library and instead find yourself in a proper Victorian palace - all soaring ceilings, ornate woodwork, and that particular smell of old books mixed with something grander. Built in 1882, it's part library, part art gallery, part museum, and honestly it works.

The ground floor is where the action happens. There's a permanent art collection that rotates, a decent local history section that'll appeal to anyone interested in Lancashire's industrial heritage, and the kind of reading rooms that make you want to settle in with a novel for the afternoon. Upstairs, temporary exhibitions change regularly - everything from photography to contemporary craft. The building itself is half the experience; the staircases alone are worth the visit.

If you're staying at Brylea Caravan Park or Smithills View Campsite, both just under four miles away, this makes an excellent rainy-day stop or a cultural breather between outdoor activities. Families with older kids will appreciate it more than toddlers - there's not much interactive stuff, but teenagers who like art or local history will find plenty to occupy them for a couple of hours.

Admission is free, which seems almost criminal given what you're getting. Open Monday to Saturday 9am-5pm, Sundays 11am-4pm. Allow at least an hour, longer if exhibitions catch your eye. It's not a thrill ride, but it's genuine, interesting, and proper worth the short drive from the surrounding parks.
