Harold's Stones

Two standing stones rise from the Gloucestershire countryside near Lydney, and they've been here so long that nobody's entirely sure why. Harold's Stones are the real deal - genuine Bronze Age monuments that have survived millennia of ploughing, building, and general neglect. What you get is a pair of weathered pillars in a field, frankly humble compared to Stonehenge, but all the more compelling for their quiet defiance.

They're free to visit and accessible year-round, though there's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of. You'll need to find them yourself - part of their charm, really. The walk takes ten minutes from the nearest road, and it's genuinely worth the effort if you're interested in Bronze Age settlement patterns or just enjoy the peculiar magic of old stones in open fields.

History buffs will get the most from a visit, particularly those keen on local archaeology. Kids might manage twenty minutes before restlessness sets in. Summer's the obvious choice, when the ground's dry and the walk doesn't feel like a slog.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Forest and Wye Valley, Greenacres, or Bracelands - Harold's Stones makes an easy morning detour before heading towards Lydney or deeper into the Forest of Dean.
