Walking into Hardwicke Farm Covert feels like stepping back into a proper working woodland - the kind of place where you'll hear more birdsong than footsteps. It's a forest patch just outside Gloucester that rewards explorers willing to leave the main paths alone, though admittedly it's not somewhere you'd spend all day.

The covert itself is modest in scale but dense with character. Ancient trees, tangled undergrowth, and the sort of muddy trails that mean your boots will need attention afterwards. You'll get good views of native woodland management here - it's clearly maintained for both wildlife and forestry rather than polished for tourists. Come in spring for bluebells and bird activity, autumn for the colour. Summer's pleasant enough but can feel claustrophobic under the canopy.

It's not the place for young children expecting novelty or facilities.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Baldwin's Brook is closest at under three miles - this makes a natural morning outing before pushing on toward the Severn Valley or Forest of Dean proper. Free to access, no formal car park that I could find, so park considerately on the verge. Allow ninety minutes to two hours. Best visited with realistic expectations: it's local woodland, not a destination in itself.
