Harding's Wood

Ancient oak and beech trees form a proper canopy overhead as you follow the winding paths through this woodland just outside Ilfracombe. Harding's Wood feels like stepping back in time - no manicured trails or visitor centres here, just natural forest doing what forests do best.

Families with energetic kids will love the freedom to explore, though keep little ones close as paths can be unclear in places. The undergrowth gets thick during summer months, making spring and autumn the best times for a proper ramble. Dog walkers use it regularly, so expect some four-legged company.

Bird spotters should bring binoculars - the mix of deciduous and evergreen trees attracts a good variety of species. It's not a full-day attraction by any stretch, but perfect for burning off energy before heading back to your holiday park. Most of the nearby sites like Golden Coast Holiday Park and Stowford Farm Meadows are within easy driving distance, making this a handy addition to a North Devon break.

Expect muddy boots and possibly getting turned around once or twice. That's rather the point though - sometimes the best woods are the ones that haven't been tidied up for tourists.
