Hardacre Wood

The woodland floor at Hardacre Wood is thick with moss and leaf litter - the sort of place where your footsteps go quiet and you actually notice birdsong. It's a proper Norfolk forest, dense enough to feel like proper countryside even though you're nowhere near the coast, and it sits well east of the main attractions most visitors flock to.

Walking through here is straightforward. The paths are manageable without being manicured, which is exactly what you want. You're looking at mixed woodland - nothing rare or showy, just honest trees doing what they do. It's the sort of place where families with younger kids can burn off energy without worrying about steep gradients or dodgy footing. Teenagers will find it a bit dull unless they're into wildlife spotting or photography.

The real appeal is that it sits within easy reach of several solid holiday parks. Parkdean Resorts Manor Park is only four miles away, as is Searles Leisure Resort - both proper family bases. If you're staying at Wild Luxury's glamping setup, you're about five and a half miles out but it's a worthwhile drive for a couple of hours in the forest.

Allow two hours maximum. Pack binoculars if you're keen on birds. There's no café, no facilities that we know of, and it's free to access - which means it'll be quieter than the manicured attractions. Good for a morning walk between breakfast and heading to the beach or whatever else Norfolk's offering. Not a destination in itself, but a proper addition to a holiday week.
