Harbour Beach

The sandy sweep of Harbour Beach sits right on St Ives' doorstep, and it's genuinely one of those rare stretches where the town's charm actually enhances rather than clutters the shoreline. You've got golden sand, proper Atlantic swells when conditions are right, and enough rock pools at low tide to keep kids occupied for hours without feeling like you're trapped in some manufactured attraction.

The beach itself is compact - maybe half a mile across at its widest - which means it fills up quickly on summer weekends. But catch it early or go shoulder season (May or September) and you'll have something approaching peace. The seafront is lined with cafes and fish and chip shops that range from touristy overpriced to genuinely decent, and you can easily wander into the town's maze of galleries and independent shops without feeling like you've left the beach properly.

Walkers get a decent deal here too. The South West Coast Path runs right alongside, so it's simple to extend a beach afternoon into something longer. Families will find this more manageable than some of Cornwall's wilder beaches - it's sheltered enough that even young swimmers won't get battered about.

If you're based at Polmanter Touring Park just up the road, Harbour Beach is a natural evening stroll. Haven Riviere Sands is a touch further but still walkable. It's not dramatic or isolated, but that's rather the point - this is the beach for days when you want sun, sand, and easy access to decent food without the faff.
