Happy House

The converted watermill on the outskirts of Ripon houses one of North Yorkshire's more unexpected creative spaces. Happy House isn't trying to be grand - it's a working arts centre where local artists have studios, and visitors can actually watch people making things rather than just looking at finished pieces behind velvet ropes.

You'll find painting, printmaking, sculpture, and craft work on display, with regular exhibitions that change through the year. The building itself is the real draw - all exposed brick and original millstone features, the sort of place that makes you want to linger with a coffee. Kids tend to enjoy it more than your typical gallery because there's usually something interactive happening, and the informal studio setup means artists are often around to chat about their work.

It's free to wander in, which is proper good value for a rainy afternoon. Allow an hour if you're serious about it, thirty minutes if you're just passing through. The café does decent tea and cakes.

If you're based at Sleningford Watermill or Camp Kátur Glamping nearby, it's a ten-minute drive into Ripon proper and worth combining with a walk around the cathedral or a browse of the independent shops. It won't take your whole day, but it's the sort of place that reminds you why a quieter corner of the Dales beats a crowded tourist trap. Best visited mid-week when it's actually peaceful.
