Hankley Common

Hankley Common spreads across the Surrey heathland just south of Farnham like a proper wild space that feels properly removed from the commuter belt. It's open moorland dotted with birch and pine, with walking trails that criss-cross the heath and let you move at whatever pace suits you. The ground is boggy in patches - wear decent boots - but that's part of what makes it feel alive. Heather blooms from August onwards and turns the whole place purple, which is reason enough to time a visit for late summer.

This isn't a manicured park with cafes and car parks. It's raw common land, which means it draws serious walkers and nature spotters rather than families after a quick stroll. You can easily spend two or three hours here following the network of paths, spotting adders and lizards if you're lucky, and getting genuinely lost if you're not paying attention. The common is free to access and there's no formal opening hours - it's genuinely open all hours.

It complements a broader week walking the Surrey hills without feeling like a tourist tick-box. The real value here is solitude and the chance to see heathland properly managed and properly wild.
