Hanger Copse is a proper mixed woodland - beech and oak mostly, with plenty of undergrowth that keeps things feeling genuinely wild rather than manicured. You're not dealing with a formal nature reserve here; it's the kind of place where you can actually get lost for an hour without trying, which is exactly the appeal.

The canopy works in your favour, especially if you've chosen a drizzly Hampshire afternoon to visit. Damp leaf litter cushions your footsteps, and there's enough dappled light filtering through to make photography interesting without being Instagram-obvious about it. Walkers will find genuine peace here - the birdsong competition is real, and you'll spot woodland birds doing actual woodland things rather than posing for tourists.

Families with kids old enough to handle uneven ground and fallen branches will have a decent time, though there's no playground infrastructure or facilities to speak of. Younger children might lose interest after forty minutes unless they're the type to get properly absorbed in stick-collecting and log-turning.

If you're staying at Hampshire Hills just down the road, this becomes an obvious morning walk before the weather turns. Free access, no gates, no opening hours - just turn up. Allow ninety minutes for a proper explore without rushing. It won't be the highlight of your park holiday, but it's excellent for clearing your head between the facilities back at camp.
