Hanchurch Woods

Walk far enough into Hanchurch Woods and you'll forget you're only a few miles from Stafford. The woodland paths here are genuinely good - proper mature trees, decent trails that don't turn into mud baths even after rain, and enough space that you're not constantly dodging other walkers on a weekend.

It's the sort of place where an hour disappears easily. Families with younger kids will manage fine on the main paths, though there's enough woodland to explore if you fancy wandering further afield. The understory is thick enough to feel secluded, and in spring the bluebells put on a decent show. Walkers gravitate here because it's reliable - no steep climbs to speak of, well-maintained routes, and the kind of quiet you actually notice after being anywhere near Stafford town centre.

There's a car park that makes access straightforward, and it's free to wander about as you'd expect from a public wood. Budget a couple of hours if you're taking it seriously, though you can do a quick 40-minute loop if you're pressed for time.

If you're based at Fledgling Farm just down the road, this becomes an obvious choice for a morning walk before anything else in the day gets going. It's not going to blow your mind, but it does its job properly - good woodland, accessible, and the sort of place where you'll actually see why people bother with countryside walking.
