Hamilton Wood

Walking into Hamilton Wood feels like stepping back about fifty years. This isn't some manicured forest park with signposted trails and interpretive boards - it's proper woodland, the kind where you actually need to look where you're putting your feet. The trees crowd in tight, mostly mature conifers mixed with birch and oak, and the floor is thick with needles and moss that muffles everything. It's quiet in a way that most woods aren't anymore.

You'll get the most out of Hamilton Wood if you actually like walking rather than snapping photos at a viewpoint. Families with young kids should probably give it a miss unless they're the outdoorsy type - there's no playground, no cafe, no facilities to speak of. But if you're staying at one of the caravan parks near Anstruther - Silverdyke or Kilrenny Mill are closest at under three miles - and want a proper woodland walk without driving halfway across Fife, this delivers. The wood is small enough that an hour covers it comfortably, but large enough that you won't feel like you're just tramping in circles.

Entry appears to be free, and there's no obvious gate or barrier, so you can rock up whenever. Early morning is brilliant if you're after any chance of spotting deer or other wildlife. The downside is it's genuinely easy to lose your bearings - bring a map or go with someone who knows the place. It's not dramatic or Instagram-friendly, but that's rather the point.
