Hambleton Playing Field

A flat expanse of grassland just outside Selby that's absolutely brilliant for a proper walk if you're staying in the area. Hambleton Playing Field isn't dramatic - there are no hills to climb or ancient ruins to photograph - but that's rather the point. This is working countryside where you can stretch your legs without faffing about with map reading or scrambling over stiles.

The field itself is open and exposed, which means the wind can be a bit bracing, but on a decent day the sky dominates everything and you get a real sense of space. It's the kind of place where you'll see the occasional dog walker or local jogger, which tells you it's properly used rather than some overlooked corner of the map. Birdwatchers might find it worth a visit during migration seasons - the openness attracts various species passing through.

Families with younger kids will find it manageable but potentially a bit dull if you're after drama. Older children and adults who simply want to burn off energy or clear their heads will get more from it. There's nothing here to buy or see in a structured sense - it's purely about being outside and moving about.

If you're based at York South just outside Selby, this is a decent fifteen-minute walk from the park and requires no planning whatsoever. Combine it with a proper explore of Selby town itself or pair it with a visit to somewhere with more visual appeal if you've got an afternoon to kill. Bring sturdy boots in winter - it gets muddy.
